Bank Statement Converter

How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel

A statement is one of the most private files you own, and one misplaced row breaks a reconciliation. So this converter does two things differently: it stays on your device, and it refuses a statement it cannot prove.

Steps

  1. Download the PDF statement from your bank's net banking. A file from the bank has readable text; a scan does not.
  2. Open the converter and choose the file. If it is protected, type the password when asked.
  3. Check the totals shown, then download Excel or CSV.

Questions

Is my bank statement uploaded?

No. The file is opened and read by your browser, on your device. There is no upload step and no account.

What does the balance check prove?

For every row, the previous balance plus the credit or minus the debit must equal the balance the bank printed, to the last paisa or cent. That catches a missing row, an extra row, a misread amount and a row placed on the wrong side.

What does it not prove?

Dates, descriptions and reference numbers are not part of any sum, so they are copied as printed without proof. Check them if you rely on them. When a statement prints no opening balance, the first row's amount and side cannot be proven either, and when it prints a balance only per group of rows, only each group's total is proven. The page says so in both cases.

Can it open a password-protected PDF?

Yes. Type the password when asked. It is used in your browser to open the file and is not sent or stored. We do not know your bank's password format; your bank's email or website states it.

Why was my statement refused?

Usually because it is a scan, has no running balance column, or has a layout not supported yet. The page gives the reason. We refuse rather than hand you a sheet that may be wrong.

Does it work for every bank?

Not necessarily. It reads layouts with a heading row and a balance column, in English and in some German, French and Spanish headings. It has been tested on sample layouts we made ourselves, and not on every bank. If your layout cannot be proven it is refused, so a failure costs you a minute and not a wrong ledger.
